Gastroscopy

Equine gastroscopy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that allows us to examine the stomach and upper digestive tract for ulcers, inflammation, or other abnormalities. Using a portable video endoscope, we can perform the procedure at your yard, providing fast, accurate diagnosis and helping to guide effective treatment and management plans.

Equine gastroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows us to visualise the stomach and upper digestive tract. It is an essential tool for diagnosing conditions such as equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS), gastritis, or other digestive issues that may affect health, performance, or behaviour.

When is it indicated?
Gastroscopy may be recommended for horses showing signs such as:

·       Poor appetite or weight loss

·       Changes in behaviour, irritability, or aggression under saddle

·       Recurrent colic or mild digestive upset

·       Poor performance or inconsistent work

The procedure
Using a portable 3-metre video endoscope, the examination can usually be performed at your yard. Horses are typically sedated lightly for their comfort and safety. The endoscope allows the vet to view the oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine, identifying ulcers, inflammation, or other abnormalities.

Preparation

·       Horses generally need to fast for 12–16 hours before the procedure.

·       Water may be allowed until a few hours before the examination.

·       Specific instructions will be provided when you book the appointment.

Aftercare and treatment
Following gastroscopy, your vet will discuss the findings and recommend individualised management and treatment plans, which may include dietary adjustments, medical therapy, or follow-up examinations to monitor healing.
